annie_ars - Father Agnel: The Interaction Drama
2009.09.21 16:16:15

I recently (on 18th Sep 09) took my daughter to Father Agnel School for child's interaction, poor girl unable to bear the heat(we stood outside the school gate for 30 minutes for as a punishment for reaching early, and then in the queue to get the token for her for about 20 minutes again in scorching sun), started crying by the time we got the token and headed towards the auditorium, when her turn came she was totally exhausted and again started crying, so I was allowed to take her to for the interaction, to my surprise the lady who took the interaction had no interest in listening to what the little kid was saying, she would just pop a question and either talk to the other teacher around or look somewhere else. her attitude was same in all the questions, I asked the teacher if she is listening to the child, to which she answers "you child is barely audible", if that was the situation why didnt she even once tell the child to speak loudly??? I really feel the interaction stuff is all but a staged drama and the so called selectors do not even try to access the child capability. If as a parent we are supposed to teach them all colours, shapes, Alphabets, counting, opposites, rhymes, names of animals, fruits, vegetables, birds, flowers ...(and the list goes on), before admitting the child in nursery, what will these people teach the kid.

anjali - Swine Flu in Children- Symptoms and Precautions
2009.08.08 14:48:22

As we all know that swine flu is spreading in Delhi and NCR region also. Don't panic but we need to be aware of this and help themselves in catching any flu in this season. It is known that children especially under the age of five, are more likely to catch this flu (or any other infection) as their immune systems are still maturing.

Swine flu symptoms:

1. Fever
2. Sore Throat
3. Headaches
4. Cough
5. Body aches
6. Tiredness / Weakness
7. Loss of appetite
8. Diarrhoea and Vomiting

What precautions should we take with children to avoid swine flu?

1. Wash your hands regularly.
2. Don't allow them to touch their mouth and face ,don't allow them to put their fingers in their mouth, as germs on their hand may find their way into their body
3. Try to avoid in contact with person who has already symptoms of cold and flu.
4. Try to avoid going to crowded areas , as children can get infection easily in packed crowds like Cinema, Temples, Malls, Social gatherings etc
5. If Someone has returned from abroad , avoid meeting him/her immediately and wait for another 3-4 days to meet them . This will give time for them to manifest flu symptoms , if any.
6. Make sure children or elder use tissue or handkerchief while they cough or sneeze.
7. Drink plenty of fluid, water .
8. Eat fresh fruits and healthy food , Don't let children empty stomach for long time. Maintain hygiene conditions at home or surroundings.
9. If you think your child showing any symptoms of flu them immediately contact your doctor and don't give them any medicine( swine flu medicine) by your own .
10. If you or your children didn't have any contact with person who got swine flu infection then you don't need to worry at all.

What should be done if you see any symptoms like swine flu in your child ?
1 As soon as you see the symptoms of swine flu in your child ,call child's paediatrician and inform them that your child has flu like symptoms, before you drop into their clinic. They may want to take precautions to ensure that you do not spread it to other people there.

2. The doctor will prescribe test or prescribe rest or give medication and also ask you to ensure that your child is getting enough liquids especially if they have diarrhea or vomiting. Doctors may also prescribe other medicines like painkillers, antibiotics for protection against other infections etc.,

3. Do not wait till things become worse. And please do not send your child to school or preschool, especially if they have any of these symptoms . The Government of India has also issued an order that schools cannot ask for Medical Certificate for this type of absence.

Government of India has issued new isolation guidelines.

"Any person with flu like symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat, cold, running nose etc. should go to a designated Government facility for giving his/her sample for testing for the H1N1 virus. After clinical assessment, the designated medical officer would decide on the need for testing. Except for cases that are severe, the patient would be allowed to go home (This was not allowed under the existing guidelines).

-The sample of the suspect case would be collected and sent to the notified laboratory for testing. If tested as positive for H1N1 and in case the symptoms are mild, the patient would be informed and given the option of admission into the hospital or isolation and treatment at his own home.

-In case the patient opts for home isolation and treatment, he/she would be provided with detailed guidelines / safety measures to be strictly adhered to by the entire household of the patient. He/ she would have to provide full contact details of his entire household. The house hold and social contacts would be provided with the preventive treatment.

-Notwithstanding the above guidelines, the decision of the doctor of the notified hospital about admitting the patient would be final."

GUIDELINES FOR SCHOOLS/COLLEGES/INSTITUTIONS ON INFLUENZA A/H1N1

D.32020/5/2009-EMR
Government of India
Ministry of Health & Family Welfare
Directorate General of Health Services
(Emergency Medical Relief)

There have been some cases of Influenza A H1N1 virus among students and staff in certain schools, primarily in Delhi and Maharashtra. There has been considerable speculation over the need for closure of schools to control the outbreak. This matter has been considered by the Joint Monitoring Group in the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. All schools and colleges are advised to observe the following guidelines for managing cases of infection of Influenza AH1N1.

(i) Any student or staff member showing flu like symptoms such as fever, cough, running nose and difficulty in breathing should be allowed to stay at home for a period of 7 to 10 days.

(ii) Educational institutions should not insist on production of medical certificate by the student/staff.

(iii) Educational institutions should monitor the health status of such students/staff who might have come in contact with a suspected case of Influenza AH1N1 to see whether they develop flu like symptoms. In case they do so, they should be allowed to stay home, as outlined at (i) above

(iv) In case of students staying in Hostels, the educational institutions would not only monitor the health status of the students, but also that of care providers. It has to be ensured that the care providers wear face mask and wash hands regularly. It might not be advisable to send the boarders back to home, as it would spread infection further.

(v) Educational institutions are further encouraged to report such cases to local health officers for further monitoring.

(vi) Given the current magnitude of the spread of AH1N1 infection and the fact that the current virus is fairly mild, closure of educational institutions on account of any student/staff member falling ill with flu like symptoms is not recommended.

(vii) In the first place, the schools should discourage the excursions of the students to the affected countries.

(viii) In case if the students had proceeded to affected countries on unavoidable tours, then on their return, if some students show flu like symptoms of fever, sore- throat , cough , body ache, running nose, difficulty breathing etc. they should be advised to abstain from attending school and be allowed to stay at home for a period of 7 to 10 days.

anjali - Beware ! Instant Noodles Lovers
2009.05.14 08:41:27

I think we all agree that our kids like Instant Noodles(like Maggi, top raman etc) and generally when they don't eat their food properly we give them such a option just to ensure that they eat something (although its not nutritious). There is no problem to give them such a food once a while but we should know what is correct method to cook and use these kind of junk food.

PEOPLE GENERALLY USE THIS METHOD OF COOKING MAGGI

Normally, how we cook the instant noodles is to put the noodles into a pot with water, throw in the powder and let it cook for around 3 minutes and then it's ready to eat.

This is the WRONG method of cooking the instant noodles.

By doing this, when we actually boil the ingredients in the powder, normally with MSG (Aginomoto), it will change the molecular structures of the MSG causing it to be toxic.

The other thing that you may or may not realize is that, the noodles are coated with wax and it will take around 4 to 5 days for the body to excrete the wax after you have taken the noodles...

CORRECT METHOD :

1. Boil the noodles in a pot with water.
2. Once the noodles is cooked, take out the noodles, and throw away the water which contains wax.
3. Boil another pot of water till boiling and put the noodles into the hot boiling water and then shut the fire.
4. Only at this stage when the fire is off, and while the water is very hot, put the ingredient with the powder into the water, to make noodle soup.
5. However, if you need dry noodles, take out the noodles and add the ingredient with the powder and toss it to get dry noodles.

Dietician's Note: If you buy plain hakka noodles you may initially need to boil it in water and discard the water. This will soften he noodles, but to prevent it from sticking we need to add a tbsp of oil, also the noodles are deep fried partially to make it crunchy and then dust it with flour to prevent it from sticking while boiling. Hence when you buy the noodles they are already made unhealthy and this is the type we use to make stir fry noodles, and the regular maggi too is made the same way plus they add MSG/ ajinomoto and other chemical preservatives. If the frequency of consumption of plain maggi is more than 3 times a week, then it is very hazardous...

I think there will be no problem if we cook Maggi using correct method although it will take 5-7 mins instead of 2 mins easy cooking but child's health is more important than anything else .
